When Beverly was in eighth grade, her teacher sent her poem “Stars” to a high school anthology, and it was published. A confessed nonreader, she nevertheless attended Midwestern University, read a lot, and graduated cum laude with a teaching degree. Her stories and articles have been published in leading children’s magazines. She has two novels for teenagers published in trade paperback, with three others under contract. She is a retired teacher and would love to visit your school to share the wonderful world of reading and writing with your students.
BEVERLY’S PROGRAMS
FUN WITH READING – Grades Pre-K – 2 (30 minutes)
Using stuffed animals and transparencies of her magazine articles “A Mother’s Love” and “How Does Your Daddy Carry You?” she reads about the different ways certain animals care for their babies. Volunteers can share stories about their favorite animals.
HOW TO WRITE A STORY – Grades 3 – 5 (45 minutes)
Bev looks at the making of a book, from finding ideas to research, writing, and editing. She shows transparencies and takes students step-by-step through her historical fiction work-in-progress about the Orphan Trains. Q/A session.
THE WONDERFUL WORLD OF BOOKS – Grades 6 - 8 (45 minutes)Bev discusses how a nonreader discovered the excitement of books and not only became a reader but a writer, as well. She uses transparencies to show students where the idea for her novel for teens, “Listen to the Ghost,” came from and also discusses the process of researching and writing the book. Q/A session. Please provide an overhead projector and screen.
Although she prefers small groups of 30 or less, Beverly will talk with larger groups to meet your needs. She will do 2 to 3 presentations a day, averaging 30 to 45 minutes each. She is scheduling visits for 2007-2008. For more information, contact her by e-mail: Beverlysmcclure @ aol.com. (Without the spaces.)
Bev also will do hands-on presentations where the students together practice the steps in writing a book to come up with their own stories.
She is available for library talks and readings, clubs, book fairs, and other organizations.
